Matthew Thurston (tentative)

Director of Sustainability

Sustainability professional with a background in manufacturing and operations. I’m passionate about building strong teams and fostering more creative ways of doing business to create lasting, positive impacts for communities and ecosystems.

I have the good fortune to lead sustainability initiatives on behalf of Recreational Equipment, Inc. REI is North America’s largest consumer cooperative. We are a $3 billion organization with 14,000 employees who are committed to inspiring, educating, equipping, and supporting people in getting outside. It is an incredible community committed to the belief that a life outdoors is a life well lived.

The scope of my work spans a range of topics, including labor rights in manufacturing, sustainable chemistry for our products, resource efficiency in our store operations, and environmental advocacy at local and national levels. I work alongside an amazing team of sustainability experts, and I am fortunate to partner with REI’s senior leaders, product designers, merchants, retail teams, wholesale brands, product manufacturers, and external stakeholders.

The outdoor ethos permeates my own life. I’m an avid hiker, backpacker, trail runner, cyclist, and dog chaser. On occasion you’ll still find me on the ultimate frisbee pitch, trying to keep up with the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts.
